Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

Applying for financial aid begins with completing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). When you submit a FAFSA, you are applying for federal loans, grants, and work-study funding. The U.S. Federal Department of Education uses the information provided on the FAFSA to determine your eligibility for federal financial assistance. The State of Illinois also uses the FAFSA to determine your eligibility for state aid programs like the Monetary Award Program (MAP Grant).

The FAFSA is free! There are no fees to process the FAFSA, whether you apply online or on paper. The easiest way to complete and submit a FAFSA is online at www.fafsa.gov. Since this electronic process uses built-in edits, the number of potential errors in completing your FAFSA is greatly reduced. You and your parents (if you are declared dependent) need to obtain a personal identification number (PIN) from the U.S. Department of Education in order to apply online. To obtain a PIN or check your PIN status, visit www.pin.ed.gov.

You can also fill out a paper version of the FAFSA. You can print out a PDF version from www.fafsa.gov. You may also request a paper form at the Governors State University Office of Financial Aid or the Department of Education.

Your FAFSA results are electronically sent to GSU if you provide the Governors State Federal School Code on your FAFSA. The Federal School Code for Governors State University is 009145.
