Elaine P. Maimon, Ph.D., President, Governors State University
As its fifth president, Dr. Elaine P. Maimon has led the transformation of Governors State University (GSU) from an upper-division institution to a full-service, comprehensive university with a four-year undergraduate program reflecting the best research on general education; a residence facility designed as a living/learning community with full-time faculty members in residence; an increased number of international students; an emerging athletic program; and enrollment growth in double digits.
GSU's award-winning Dual Degree Program, designed in partnership with community colleges and supported by a major grant from the Kresge Foundation, creates a seamless pathway from the associate degree to the bachelor's degree.
GSU's transformation has strengthened its commitment to students of all ages and backgrounds, and the university continues to provide top service to working adults. Dr. Maimon is proud that the Lumina Foundation includes GSU in its nine-member consortium of Completion Universities. The university also has launched its first five doctoral programs during her tenure.
Dr. Maimon came to GSU with considerable administrative and faculty experience, after serving as Chancellor of the University of Alaska Anchorage and as a Vice President of Arizona State University, where she led the West Campus.
An expert in the teaching of writing and a founder of Writing Across the Curriculum, Dr. Maimon has published many books, including A Writer's Resource (5th edition).
She has served on the boards of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU), the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), and the National Council of Teachers of English. She is a member of The Chicago Network, a group of outstanding women leaders.
Her many awards include the Donna Shavlik Award for Women's Leadership in Higher Education, presented by the American Council on Education (ACE) in 2014 and the Chicagoland ATHENA Leadership Award (2014)
Dr. Maimon earned her B.A. (magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa), M.A., and Ph.D. (with distinction) in English at the University of Pennsylvania.
