Prairie Place construction on schedule

March 20, 2014

Despite the particularly harsh winter and all the challenges it's posed, construction crews working on GSU's first student residence have remained on schedule for a projected July opening.

Record low temperatures and the third most snowfall in Chicagoland history challenged construction crews along the way. But collaboration among the contractor and subcontractors have minimized the impact of the weather on the project.

Crews are in the process of installing insulation, siding, drywall and windows. Sewer lines are almost completely installed and power is about ready for some portions of the north wing.

"Yes, the frigid weather did impact some portion of the project progress," said Sajid Mian, associate vice president for facilities development and management. "However, with smart planning, a proactive approach and excellent coordination by our general contractor and subcontractors, we have been able to minimize any impact on the construction schedule."

Prairie Place will be the first residence on GSU's campus that students can call their home away from home. Living at Prairie Place will give students an opportunity to interact with others who share common interests. Or they will encounter fellow students they otherwise might not have had a chance to meet on campus.

Prairie Place will be a residence that supports students' academic and social learning. They will participate in activities that connect them with other students that share a particular academic program. There will even be a classroom where students can participate in study sessions, meetings or gather to hear special speakers and guests. And studies show that when students live on campus and have more interaction with others who have similar interests, their grade-point average goes up.

There are four floor plans available. A suite has a single room shared by two residents. There are two-bedroom apartments with single occupancy for each bedroom. There are also two bedroom apartments with two residents per bedroom. Four-bedroom apartments are single occupancy per bedroom.
