Information Security Program Honored

University Park, IL, April 16, 2008 – With the increase of computer and network attacks, information security has become a very serious concern. The Information Security Certificate offered at Governors State University provides the coursework needed to respond to the security concerns of government, academia, business, and industry.

The Committee on National Security Standards (CNSS) recently announced that the program offered by GSU meets 100 percent of their certification standards. CNSS operates under direction of the Department of Defense. Its functions include providing a national forum for the discussion of information security issues and setting national standards.

Dr. Yun-Yau (Steve) Shih, Computer Science Program Coordinator at GSU, and Dr. Dingbang Xu, Assistant Professor at the university, developed the current program on information assurance. They will be recognized at the CNSS awards ceremony in Dallas, Texas this June as part of a colloquium on “Industrial Cyber Security.”

“Public and private institutions, companies, and organizations need information security professionals to protect digital assets. The Information Security Certificate is offered to students who wish to obtain theoretical and practical knowledge in information security,” said Shih. “We are very pleased that our certificate meets the high standards set by CNSS.”

Coursework for the certificate includes classes in information security and policy, cryptography and national security, and extensive laboratory work in information security. Shih also noted the certificate program was developed in conjunction with Center for Technology Collaboration at GSU and incorporates the degree programs of Computer Science, Criminal Justice, and Management Information Systems at the university.
