GSU President Honored by Matteson Rotary

University Park, IL, August 20, 2008 - Dr. Elaine P. Maimon, president of Governors State University recently received an honorary membership to the Matteson Rotary Club. She is only the second person to be named an honorary member of the organization.

“Dr. Maimon received this honor for her community involvement and dedication to offering education opportunities,” said John D. Hagenow, of Matteson, who sponsored her membership.

The Matteson Rotary Club is a service organization dedicated to providing humanitarian service and building goodwill and peace throughout the world. Its membership comprises business, education, and governmental leaders from throughout the community.

“Governors State University and the Rotary share the same purpose – to serve the community. I am proud to accept this honorary membership,” said Dr. Maimon.

“We are very pleased to honor Dr. Maimon,” said Jackie Small, president of the Matteson Rotary and Director of Development at The Center for Performing Arts at Governors State University. “The Rotary Club is always searching for ways to help our community, just as Dr. Maimon is working to increase the programs and services offered at Governors State University.”

The Assistant District Governor representing District 6450 of Rotary International, Geoff Slawson, of Homewood, was present at the ceremony and welcomed Dr. Maimon to the organization.

In addition to the honorary membership, the Matteson Rotary Club also donated $1000 to the GSU Promise. The GSU Promise is a program that, when implemented, will enable students who qualify to earn their bachelor’s degrees unencumbered by student loans. The program is currently accepting donations to establish the endowment.
