University Park, IL, October 27, 2008 – With more than 315 students from different countries around the world attending Governors State University and students and faculty studying, interning, or teaching abroad, celebrating International Education Week at the university has important meaning.
“When students from different countries take classes together, they learn more than just the subjects being taught,” says Vreni Mendoza, Director of International Services at GSU. “They learn that our differences are much less important than our similarities and that the world outside of Illinois is worth exploring and learning more about.”
International Education Week activities begin on November 17 with a day of activities in the Hall of Governors including student presentations about their home country, international food tastings, games, a geography awareness quiz, and Mehendi, the art of decorating the body with henna. Photos of friends and family submitted by students, faculty, and staff will also be on display as part of “We All Smile in the Same Language.”
Activities continue on November 18, at 2 p.m., in Sherman Hall with a coffee and cookie social hour and several presentations including “Teaching and Learning Experience in China” and SPEAR-IT, a drum and dance experience. The afternoon will also include the presentation of “24 Ways to Go International.”
An International Resource Fair will be held on November 20, from 1 to 4 p.m., in the Cafeteria Annex. Information about study abroad opportunities will be presented as well as information for faculty about short-term study and teaching opportunities in other countries will be available. A U.S. Passport Application booth, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., will offer passport application, renewal, and photographic services.
International Education Week activities are co-sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education and State Department. All activities are free and open to the public. Governors State University is located at 1 University Parkway, University Park, Illinois. For more information contact the Office of International Services, (708) 534-3087.
