University Park, Illinois (May 16, 2005) -- A conference on “Strategic Opportunities for Trade with India” will be held at Governors State University beginning at 9:00 a.m. in the university’s Hall of Honors on May 20.

A continental breakfast and lunch will be served.  There is no registration fee, but participants are asked to sign up for the program by the morning of May 19 by calling 708.534.4930, or sending an e-mail to bpa-info@govst.edu.

The program is jointly sponsored by the university’s College of Business and Public Administration, CenterPoint, its small business development center, the Global Trade Center at Governors State University, and the Chicago Southland Chamber of Commerce.

Highlights of the program include:

  • a report from the Illinois Trade Mission to India;
  • a presentation by Tony LaRocca, trade specialist on India for the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity;
  • a presentation on “Financing for Exports” by John Nevell,  International Trade Financing Specialist for the Small Business Administration;
  • a panel discussion on “Trade with India: Strategic Opportunities for Small and Medium Businesses” led by Dr, Akkanad Isaac, professor of business at Governors State University.

“India presents incredible opportunities for mid-size and small businesses in our region,” Dr. Isaacs said.  “It is a nation with a mature democracy and a growing economy.  India should be seen both as a market for the goods and services companies in our region can provide, as well a source of quality products and services for those companies.”
