Governors State University Selects Dr. Terry L. Allison as Provost

University Park, Illinois, July 08, 2010 - Governors State University recently named Dr. Terry L. Allison as Provost. Allison comes to GSU after spending over nineteen years at two separate California State University campuses. His most recent role at California State University, Los Angeles was as Dean of the College of Arts and Letters.

terry_allison_web“Dr. Allison brings a transparent and collegial leadership style to GSU, as well as innovative thinking and a history of creative strategic planning and program building in a wide variety of subject areas to serve working and underserved students,” said GSU President, Dr. Elaine P. Maimon.

As Provost at GSU, Allison will be responsible for providing leadership to GSU’s academic wing and maintaining the quality, accessibility, and cultural diversity of university programs. Other duties include negotiation and management of the faculty contract, representation of the academic wing to the Board of Trustees, support to the Academic Program and Policy Committee of the Board, development of university policies, and management of the program review process.

Dr. Allison is also an active author, editor, and grant writer. He played a lead role in the founding of the Quinceañiera Project, which motivates fifteen-year-old Latina students to complete high school and attend California State University, San Marcos. He also authored the Title IIIA grant proposal that created health and human services programs at San Marcos and launched a new MFA in Television, Film, and Theatre at Cal State LA.

Allison has a special interest in the growth and vision of the academic programs at GSU. “I’m excited to be at GSU and fully on-board with the goals set forth in the university’s strategic plan,” he said. “GSU is in a unique position to address the needs of both traditional and returning adult students and I look forward to further improving the academic experience of our students.”

Allison holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Political Science and a Master of Library and Information Science from the University of California, Berkeley. He also holds a Master of Arts in Comparative Literature and Doctor of Philosophy in Literature from University of California, San Diego. Allison currently resides in Flossmoor, Illinois.
