GSU President Receives Strong Endorsement from Board of Trustees
University Park, Illinois, December 17, 2010 - Governors State University President Elaine P. Maimon last week received a strong vote of confidence from the university’s Board of Trustees.
At their regular meeting, Trustees unanimously approved a resolution expressing “continuing support and sincere appreciation and gratitude” for Dr. Maimon’s leadership. The vote followed a comprehensive assessment of the president’s performance by the Board of Trustees.
Following the vote, Dr. Maimon thanked the Board of Trustees and said her success was the result of the faculty and staff’s dedication. Dr. Maimon, GSU’s fifth president, was appointed to the university’s top leadership position in 2007.
During her tenure, the resolution states, Dr. Maimon has focused on, and succeeded in, five major areas of leadership that are of strategic interest to GSU’s future: growing enrollment and university programs, improving educational and service quality, increasing and enhancing the access of all students to GSU educational programs, establishing the university as a regional leader in area development, and enhancing the productivity and accountability of the university’s programs and management.
The Board of Trustees “encourages and supports Dr. Maimon as she continues to work with the Board, the faculty, staff and students, and all other stakeholders and supports of the university to ensure even greater accomplishment in her leadership of Governors State University.”
Dr. Maimon undergoes an annual review by the Board of Trustees. However, the Association of Governing Boards recommends that comprehensive assessments of university presidents take place every three to five years, and that it include involvement and participation of all segments of the university community, as well as off campus partners and community organizations.
The Board commissioned independent higher education consultant Robert Atwell to assist with the evaluation process. He visited GSU in November and conducted 83 interviews regarding Dr. Maimon’s performance.
