Governors State University appoints new College of Arts and Sciences dean

University Park, June 13, 2006 – Governors State University announced the appointment of Dr. Eric V. Martin as dean of the university's College of Arts and Sciences today. The appointment will become effective July 1.

Martin, a seven year veteran of Governors State University, most recently served at the Associate Provost and Director of the Center for Quality.
“I am excited to be able to continue my work with Governors State University," said Martin. “This position will allow me to play a larger hands-on role in developing educational programs for our students and the surrounding communities."

Martin said that he will build on the college's already strong foundation. “My focus as dean will be to strengthen existing programs and to seek new opportunities through new partnerships, expanded use of technology, and renew the focus on international programming."

Provost Paul Keys noted that Martin's record of scholarship, creative activity, university teaching, professional service, and overall academic achievement warranted a senior-level appointment to dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

“He has established an exemplary track record at Governors State," noted Keys. “His strong academic background coupled with his open-mindedness, will help the College of Arts and Sciences to reinforce its current programs and develop new ones."

In addition to his recent administrative duties, Martin also stayed rooted in the university's academic programs as a tenured Professor of English. “He is dedicated to academic excellence and quality instruction as well as being dedicated to the support and promotion of faculty scholarship and professional service," Keys added.

Martin earned his Doctorate in English from Illinois State University in 1995 and was a tenure track faculty member and Coordinator of the English program at the University of Findlay, prior to coming to GSU in 1999. He has taught rhetoric and composition courses ranging from first-year writing through graduate courses and he has taught courses in both traditional classroom and online formats.

Currently a resident of Frankfort, Illinois, Martin is married and has one son and one daughter. He is originally from Dixon, Illinois.
