Pringle Scholarship awarded to GSU student

University Park, June 12 - Governors State University Board of Governors student Carol Martinez been selected as the 2006 recipient of the prestigious Robert A. Pringle Memorial Scholarship award.

“I am extremely honored to receive this scholarship,” says Martinez of Evergreen Park. “It will help me continue my goal to earn my degree. I hope to graduate this fall.”

The Pringle Memorial Scholarship is administered through an endowment by the Pringle family. Robert Pringle, in whose name the scholarship is awarded, helped create the Board of Governors degree program in Illinois thirty years ago.

The Board of Governors degree program offers college credit based on what a student has learned from life experiences. It was created for students like Martinez with work and life experience directly equal, in many cases, to college level work. The Board of Governors student completes the remaining university degree requirements within the program, often tailoring undergraduate studies in preparation for graduate work.

Martinez, a single mother of six and the manager of the Volunteer Department at Little Company of Mary Hospital, believes that the Board of Governors degree program at Governors State University was the ideal way for her to pursue her degree. She hopes to continue her education by earning her masters degree, specializing in communication.

“After graduating, I would like to continue helping others reach their potential through communication.”
