The laws of the State of Illinois establish the Board of Trustees of Governors State University which has the authority and responsibility to operate, manage, control, and maintain Governors State University.
The Board herewith adopts Bylaws, Governing Policies, and Board Regulations intended to encourage and facilitate cooperation among the Board, the President, faculty, staff, and students in their mutual efforts to strengthen and improve education within Governors State University.
The Board recognizes that the mission of the university is complex and imposes interdependent relationships among the Board and the university community, which must pursue the goal of excellence in a spirit of mutual trust.
As the final institutional authority, the Board entrusts the coordination and management of the university to the President with the understanding that provision shall be made for advisory participation by the faculty, staff, and students in university decision making. In assigning these duties to the President the Board delegates primary responsibility to the President for the management of the university.
The Board emphasizes its conviction that inquiry and discussion, safeguarded by tenure and academic freedom are essential to the quest for truth. Furthermore, the Board endorses the principle of shared governance within the framework of its Governing Policies.
Accordingly, the Governors State University Board of Trustees includes a student, elected by the student body, who has full voting rights. The student BOT representative also sits on the Academic Policies Committee of the GSU Board of Trustees.

This year’s AGB conference drew 800 participants and most attended the Tuesday panel discussion.
Jack Beaupre, Chair of the Board of Trustees, praised Fletcher’s performance as a student trustee.

“As a representative of the most significant stakeholder – the students – during her
tenure on the GSU Board, Erin has continually provided responsible input to our Board and is a great example of the merit of incorporating shared governance within our system,” he said.
“Erin did a great job not only representing the administration and the Board, but in speaking very highly of the students and articulating their needs,” Trustee Brian D. Mitchell said.
