Celebrating Diversity and Social Justice
Let's celebrate diversity with our observance of history and heritage months. Throughout each designated month, Governors State University features a variety of programs and events highlighting the culture, traditions and contributions to society which these groups have made. During these months we host a variety of special events - you are bound to find one (or more) that you won't want to miss.
January: MLK Day of Service Volunteer Opportunities

February: Black History Month
Black History Month serves as a dedicated time to honor and celebrate the achievements, contributions, and resilience of African Americans throughout history. The month-long celebration originated from the efforts of historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent figures who advocated for the recognition of Black history in American society.
Black History Month typically involves various events, educational programs, and cultural activities that highlight the struggles, triumphs, and cultural richness of the African American community. It provides an opportunity for reflection, education, and dialogue on the ongoing journey toward racial equality and social justice.
March: Women”s History Month
Women's History Month honors the contributions, achievements, and struggles of women throughout history and in contemporary society. It is a time for reflection, education, and advocacy for gender equality and women's rights, highlighting the accomplishments of women in various fields and promoting awareness of the challenges they have faced and overcome. Women's History Month serves as a platform to inspire future generations to pursue gender equity and celebrate the achievements of women in all aspects of life.
April: Arab American Heritage Month
Arab American Heritage Month recognizes and celebrates the contributions, culture, and history of Arab Americans. This provides an opportunity to raise awareness, foster understanding, and promote appreciation for the rich cultural traditions and achievements of Arab Americans across various fields, including art, literature, science, business, and politics. Arab American Heritage Month also serves as a platform to address issues facing the Arab American community and to promote dialogue and inclusivity.
Governors State University's collaboration with United Way's April Food Day is a vital initiative addressing food insecurity among students. The annual event bring attention to this pressing issue and provides essential resources to our students. This partnership signifies the university's commitment to supporting its student body holistically, recognizing that food insecurity can profoundly impact academic performance and overall well-being. The one day event not only raises awareness and provides much needed resources, but also destigmatize discussions around food insecurity, encouraging students to seek support without hesitation. This collaborative effort underscores the power of collective action in addressing complex social challenges, fostering a more inclusive and supportive community for all.
May: Asian American and Pacific Islander Month
During Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, the university honors the rich and diverse cultures, histories, and contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders to our university community and society at large. Governors State University acknowledges and celebrates the students, faculty, and staff who share this heritage, fostering an inclusive environment where their voices are valued, and their experiences are celebrated. Through a variety of events, educational programs, and cultural activities, we aim to raise awareness, foster understanding, and celebrate the achievements of AAPI individuals and communities. Join us in commemorating AAPI Heritage Month as we celebrate the past, present, and future of Asian American and Pacific Islander cultures and experiences.
Welcome Week at our university is not just about returning to campus—it's an invitation to dive into civic engagement and intercultural education. As we gather to kick off the new academic year, Welcome Week offers a unique platform to explore service opportunities and embrace diversity. Through student organizations like Kaleidoscope, where students can join forces to support the university food pantry, we not only welcome each other back but also strengthen our commitment to making a positive impact in our community. It's a time to connect, learn, and take action together, embodying the spirit of unity and service that defines our university experience.
September 15 - October 15: National Hispanic Heritage Month
From September 15 to October 15, immerse yourself in a diverse range of events designed to promote civic engagement, service opportunities, and cultural appreciation. Join us for insightful discussions, community service initiatives, and engaging activities that showcase the diversity and resilience of Hispanic heritage, including contributions from Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Dominican, and Central and South American ethnic groups. Let's come together to honor, celebrate, and engage with the vibrant mosaic of Hispanic culture.
October: LGBTQ+ Awareness Month
LGBTQ+ Awareness Month is a significant time of recognition and celebration at Governors State University. Throughout the month we come together to honor the diversity and resilience of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other marginalized communities. At GSU, we are committed to fostering an inclusive campus culture where all identities are embraced and celebrated. During LGBTQ+ Awareness Month, we organize a range of events, discussions, and initiatives to promote understanding, raise awareness, and advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and equality. Join us as we affirm our commitment to creating a campus community that values and supports every individual, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
November: Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Month
