Research

Original research area was low-dimensional topology, knot theory—specifically, knot concordance. Currently, both research and teaching interests coincide in the history of mathematics. I find that learning about the long history of mathematics and communicating that history to my students results in the students' understanding that mathematics is not a cold subject that exists only in textbooks but a living subject that is part of the human experience.
