SES Experience

A Social Exclusion Simulation Experience

Coordinated by:
The Institute on Social Exclusion of the
Adler School of Professional Psychology
Chicago, Illinois

Social exclusion refers to the systematic undermining of certain individuals’ and communities’ access to the rights, opportunities and resources that are key to social integration. An important focus of the Institute on Social Exclusion (ISE) is the role that structural features of society (and the complex systems they comprise) play in undermining social integration. Such features as laws, regulations, public policy, institutional practices, popular values and beliefs, as well as private attitudes and impressions, can and often do play central roles in social marginalization processes.

This simulation experience is available to a limited audience of 24 students and faculty in the Criminal Justice and Psychology Programs at Governors State University. Interested individuals should be willing to engage in a scripted role-playing event designed to illustrate in an impactful way the structural and systemic barriers that formerly incarcerated individual’s face in their efforts to re-enter society once released from jail or prison.
