Governors State University’s GSU Foundation and Alumni Association sponsor several scholarships of University students. Scholarships are also available for students in specific colleges and programs.

The College of Health and Human Services also provides scholarship opportunities based on various criteria. When these are available for students in Department of Nursing programs, they will be posted below.
NLN Foundation for Nursing Education Scholarships Available
Attention Master's and Doctoral Students: Are you pursuing an advanced Nursing or Related Degree in preparation for a career as a Full-Time Academic Nurse Educator?
Three scholarships are available from the NLN Foundation for Nursing Education. Application deadline is April 30, 2013.
The NLN Foundation encourages more seasoned and ethnically diverse nurses to become nurse educators through scholarships. Awards range from $3,000 to $6,000. Candidates must be NLN members.

NURSE Corps Scholarship Program
The NURSE Corps Scholarship Program is a selective program of the U.S. Government that helps alleviate the critical shortage of nurses currently experienced by certain types of healthcare facilities located in Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs).
In exchange for a minimum two-year service commitment at a critical shortage facility located in a HPSA, NURSE Corps Scholarship recipients have their tuition, eligible fees and other costs (books, clinical supplies/instruments and uniforms) paid for them. In addition, scholarship recipients receive a monthly stipend.
This funding is made available through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services / Health Resources and Services Administration.
As much as half of the award funds are reserved for students pursuing a master's level nurse practitioner degree.
Applications are accepted once a year, usually during the spring.
Eligible Individuals
Individuals eligible for this scholarship program must be accepted or enrolled in a nursing degree program at an accredited school of nursing located in the United States:
- Associate Degree School of Nursing (ADN)
- Collegiate School of Nursing (BSN, Graduate Degree)
- Diploma School of Nursing
Application Requirements
- U.S. Citizen (U.S. born or naturalized), U.S. national, or Lawful Permanent Resident.
- Free from any Federal judgment liens.
- Free from existing service commitments.
- Not delinquent on a Federal debt
Preference is given to qualified applicants with the greatest financial need who are enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited undergraduate nursing program or Master's nurse practitioner program as full-time students.
Service Commitment
- Two-year minimum service commitment for 1-2 years of scholarship support (full-time status).
- 1-year service commitment per scholarship year for full-time status students for more than two years of scholarship support (4 years maximum support).
- Full-time status: minimum of 32 hours per week, for at least 45 weeks per year.
Twenty-six hours providing clinical services to patients.
Financial Benefits
Funding may be used for:
- Tuition
- Required Fees
- Other reasonable educational costs (e.g., books, clinical supplies/instruments and uniforms)
- Monthly support stipend for the 2012-2013 school year

A Unique Opportunity: There's Still Time to Apply!
Health Care Jobs for Chicago Southland is offering a unique opportunity for students enrolled in Governors State University’s College of Health and Human Services. As steady job growth is predicted in the healthcare industry, $250,000 has been set aside to assist existing health and health science students with scholarships and supportive services that encourage development and preparation of a well-trained, able and agile health care workforce.
Eligible students will be awarded $500 scholarships that may be used toward tuition, fees, books and/or graduation expenses. Scholarships are issued on a first-come, first-served basis while funding is available. U.S. Military veterans receive priority status.
More than Just a Scholarship
As you prepare for success, we understand that financial assistance is only one piece of the puzzle. To further assist you, we have designed the program to provide comprehensive support services in addition to the scholarship funds.
Support services include:
- Free childcare at GSU’s on-campus Family Development Center (as long as the individual is a student, and throughout the first 90 days of employment);
- Life skills and economic empowerment coaching (based on individual need);
- Resume writing, interview preparation, and job placement services (upon completion of degree or certificate program);
- Job readiness training (up to 36 hours, if needed).
Note: All scholarship recipients are required to complete a 30-minute orientation with Health Care Jobs for Chicago Southland staff and attend a one-hour Job Developer Assessment session/meeting.

This network of providers offers expertise in recruitment, intake, assessment, employment and education training, job placement and retention and case management services of eligible individuals. Educational outcome will vary from short-term certificate programs to degrees, Associate, Bachelor, Master, and Doctoral; all recognized and needed by healthcare employers. The desired outcome is that program participants become employed in a healthcare job and continue their advancement in education and healthcare employment opportunities in this region through bridging skills and development of career ladders.
