The Department of Physical Therapy provides an outstanding educational experience for students who want to enter the field of Physical Therapy — one of the fastest growing professions.
Our degree program, the Doctor of Physical Therapy, not only prepares students to enter the profession, it instills a philosophy of care designed to help our students become the advocates and leaders who will shape the profession for years to come. Our program is innovative and integrates the best of Evidence-Based Practice and Patient-Centered Care into a solid curriculum.
The Department has also developed and offers cutting-edge training in Conductive Education through its Conductive Education Certificate. The Certificate, developed with a grant from the Coleman Foundation, provides a comprehensive background in the emerging field of Conductive Education. The Certificate is an excellent program of continuing education that brings both physical and occupational therapists to the fore in this exciting, and new, method of therapy.
APTA Credentialed Clinical Instructor Program: May 31 and June 1, 2013
The Department of Physical Therapy in the College of Health and Human Services at Governors State University will sponsor the APTA Credentialed Clinical Instructor Program on Friday, May 31, 2013, and Saturday, June 1, 2013, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Room D 34050.
This program is recognized by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) as a Credentialed Clinical Instructor Program. It takes 15 hours to complete the entire program for CI Credentialing.
Who Should Attend
Physical therapists or physical therapy assistants who are clinical instructors with at east one year of clinical experience. Directors of clinical education and center coordinators of clinical education are also welcome. Class size is limited to the first 30 registrants. Occupational therapists and speech therapists are also welcome; however, they will not complete the Assessment Center or earn the APTA credential. They will receive credits for 12 contact hours of continuing education.
About the Program
The program addresses issues of planning and preparing for physical therapy students during their clinical education experiences; developing learning experiences and supporting ongoing learning through questioning and effective feedback. Skills of evaluation are discussed, as well as the identification and management of students with exceptional situations. The program closes with a brief look at legal implications for clinical educators, including issues presented by ADA legislation.

PTSA Plans Third Annual Run 4 Rehab
GSU's Third Annual Run 4 Rehab, a 5k (3.1-mile) run and 2-mile walk sponsored by GSU’s Physical Therapy Student Association (PTSA). The event will be held May 11, 2013.
Serving as co-directors of the 2013 Run 4 Rehab are Amy Flaherty and Andy Jellema, second and third-year Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students, respectively.
The Run 4 Rehab serves as a benefit to raise funds for the Miami-Marquette Challenge, a national competition between physical therapy schools to collect and distribute money for physical therapy research grants around the country.
Additional funds raised from the Run 4 Rehab go to GSU's Physical Therapy Student Association (PTSA). The purpose of the PTSA is to strive to familiarize and enhance the students with knowledge of and participation in professional organizations such a
s the American Physical Therapy Association, Illinois Physical Therapy Association, and other physical therapy-related special interest groups; develop and augment leadership skills in students; promote service learning through community outreach programs; and enhance students’ and the public’s knowledge of the physical therapy profession and Governors State University’s physical therapy program.

Dr. Russell Carter, Ed.D., P.T., Named Professor Emeritus
After joining Governors State University in 1997, Dr. Russell Carter, Ed.D., PT, has retired as Chair of the Department of Physical Therapy.
In recognition of his scholarship and years of service, Dr. Carter has been named Professor Emeritus.
