This year's Faculty Summer Institute focused on students in the age of digital communication: the issues, opportunities and challenges we face in the face-to-face and the online environment.   Our Guest Speaker enlightened and entertained with her understanding of the issues of the digital learner, and suggested ways to turn potential problems into a teaching successes.

The GSU faculty shared their experiences and triumphs in the classroom, and participated in a panel discussion with others who face similar challenges. 

In addition to engaging presentations by speakers Constance Staley and Blackboard consultant, Jonathan Ahlbrand, The winners of the Fisk Mini-Grant Technology Award for the year 2011, demonstrated the use of their chosen technology to improve learning outcomes in the classroom.  The new winners for the FSI 2012 Mini-Grant winners were announced on the second day of the Faculty Summer Institute.   

Plenary Speaker: Contance Staley

Constance Staley, 2012 Conference SpeakerOur Guest Speaker for FSI 2012 is Constance Staley, Professor of Communication at the University of Colorado,and author of ten books, including 50 Ways to Leave Your Lectern (2003) and FOCUS on College Success (2012).She presents e-seminars on timely topics to large online audiences across the country, helps institutions develop and refine their first-year seminar programs, and leads dozens of in-person teaching workshops for faculty from a variety of disciplines each year.  Over the last five years, she has presented her work at 80 colleges and conferences across the U.S. and internationally.  

Dr. Staley will share her insights on technology’s place in teaching and creative ways to digitally engage students in face-to-face, enhanced, hybrid and fully online courses.
