June 2006: Workshop presented at Social Work Action Alliance (SWAA) 2006 National Meeting and Conference “Returning to Our Roots, Social Justice Challenges in 2006”

Title: “What must we teach to prepare social workers to practice social justice?”  
Abstract: This workshop critically examined the views and reflections of practitioners and educators who together explored the ways in which social work education can prepare social justice practitioners. A social justice matrix, adapted from Finn & Jacobson, is used to illustrate how to teach social work practice.

May 2006: Presentation at the Chicago Social Forum: Dr. Zell was a co-conveners of the III Chicago Social Forum, held in May 2006.

Like its counterpart, the World Social Forum, the Chicago Social Forum provides an alternative forum for discussion of social and environmental issues. It also focuses on the local realities of Chicago and their connections with other global contexts.


Title: The Movement of the Landless Rural Workers: Land Reform in Brazil

April 2006: Presentation at The Whiteside Forum, in Morris, IL, which sponsors presentations and discussions of issues that have an international dimension.

Title: “The Landless Workers Movement and Land Reform in Brazil”

February 2006: Presentation (with Dr. Gerri Outlaw) at the Council on Social Work Education’s 2006 Annual Program Meeting.

Title: “What must we teach to prepare social workers to practice social justice?”  

Abstract: This paper examined the views and reflections of practitioners and educators who together explored ways in which social work education can prepare social justice practitioners. Social work educators and practitioner ideas about what ought to be taught and how to teach the next generation of social work professionals were reported.
