Interlibrary Loan (ILL) accepts requests from libraries throughout the United States via OCLC (our symbol is IAF), fax, and mail. All requested items should be described completely and accurately and made using accepted ALA standards. The Governors State University ILL Department will attempt to send or reply to all requests within four working days of receipt, usually within 24 hours.
Our collection catalog can be accessed through I-Share.
The borrowing library is responsible for compliance with copyright law (Title 17, US Code). Additionally, the requesting library is responsible for borrowed materials from the time they leave the supplying library until they have been received back. Books and photocopies of articles are the primary type of material lent by GSU. The GSU Library ILL Department reserves the right to refuse requests which it feels violate copyright law.
Books are loaned in Illinois and out of state at no cost for a period of 4 weeks with a 4 week renewal, except for materials from special collections. Films, videos, maps, microforms, newspapers, periodicals, photos, rare books, textbooks, reference material, and sound recordings do not circulate. We deliver books and special collection materials via Illinois Library Delivery Service (ILDS) and US Mail, unless otherwise requested.
Photocopy requests are free to Illinois libraries and Libraries Very Interested in Sharing (LVIS), and are invoiced at $10 per article to other out of state libraries. Photocopy requests have a 50 page limit. A copy of the original request and, when appropriate, an invoice for photocopy charges will accompany all materials lent. Requests received via fax will be faxed back, unless otherwise indicated. We deliver articles via email, fax, mail, and ILDS, unless special arrangements are made.
Two written notices will be mailed for overdue books or unpaid copy charges. Following that, a bill will be sent for books assumed lost. Photocopy service will be suspended to libraries owing fees for copies. Libraries may replace the books rather than pay for them upon arrangement with the Coordinator of ILL. Stamps are not accepted in payment.
The Governors State University ILL department complies with the policies outlined in the National Interlibrary Loan Code as well as those of ILLINET, the State of Illinois, and the Suburban Library System. We participate in several consortia including, but not limited to, CARLI, ILLINET, LVIS, SLS, Chicago and South Consortium.
