DNP Gets the Go Ahead

The Illinois Board of Higher Education approved the College of Health Professions’ new Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program at its December meeting. The College is now awaiting final approval for the program from the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

Program graduates will be advanced practice nurses with expertise in nursing as well as organizational issues, leadership, and population health. The DNP has also been developed to address a critical shortage of nursing faculty. One of the major barriers to increasing the capacity to educate new nurses is the lack of qualified faculty. The recognized shortage of nurses can be reduced by educating new nurses, which is another goal of the DNP.

Mayfield Appointed Assistant Provost

Dr. Sandra Mayfield has stepped down as chair of the Department of Communication Disorders (CDIS) to accept her new appointment as assistant provost.

Dean Linda Samson said Mayfield’s work as department chair was impressive.

Mayfield succeeded Professor Emeritus Jay Lubinsky as chair when Lubinsky retired in January 2007. She led the department through the reaccreditation process for the Master of Health Science in Communication Disorders with the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) during the year. ASHA completed its site visit in October; ASHA’s Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) will announce its formal decision on reaccreditation at its spring meeting.

"We continue to have outstanding leadership in the department," Dean Samson said. "Dr. William Yacullo is currently serving as acting chair."

She added that the appointment of the new CDIS department chair will be announced soon.

Health Administration Site Visit

The Department of Health Administration welcomed its site team visitors from the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME) December 5 – 7. The visit was part of the department’s reaccreditation process for the Master of Health Administration (MHA) – a process which has been in the works almost since the program’s last accreditation visit.

Department Chair Dr. Kyusuk Chung said the visit was a success.

“About 30 MHA alumni showed up at the luncheon to show their wholehearted support," he said. "We also received overwhelming support from preceptors, advisory board members, and our current students."

Chung said the team noted four program strengths and no weaknesses. He added he expects the program will receive six years reaccreditation when CAHME makes its final decision.

The visit followed an intensive self-study and review process undertaken by the department’s faculty. The self-study generated a three volume report that examines every facet of the program.

The Writing Center

Written communication is one of the most powerful skills health professions students need master. But writing ain’t always easy, and sometimes we need help.

Not to worry. The Writing Center at GSU has a crack team of writing consultants who are there to help you with that term paper, research project, or documentation conundrum.

The Writing Center helps students in three ways.

  1. Writing Center tutors are on duty in the University Library from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. Tutors can help you narrow your research focus and answer your questions about APA documentation issues.
  2. The Writing Center provides online assistance as well. The online writing center offers a twenty-four hours response to your writing with guidance on your own particular writing difficulty. The online writing center also offers links to resources, such as documentation styles (APA and AMA) and where to put that comma.
  3. The Writing Center also offers one-on-one assistance in half hour appointments for more intensive writing issues. Appointments must be made in advance. To make an appointment, call 708.534.4508.

Whatever writing issues you need to work on, the Writing Center provides outstanding support. Our advice: see the University Writing Center pros early, and see them often.

Disability Accommodations

Students who have disabilities, and who intend to request extended time on professional licensing exams, should contact Access Services for Students with Disabilities, located in the Academic Resource Center.

Registering will ensure students with disabilities receive the accommodations they need as CHP students and, when they seek additional time on licensing exams, provide necessary documentation that accommodation was provided in their undergraduate or graduate program.
