The ESL Program at Governors State University offers special programs for participants sponsored by universities, governments, and other groups of interests from all over the world. The ESL program will design an academic and cultural immersion experience program based on the group’s needs and desires such as length, instructional hours, and activities.     Pronunciation Boot Camp: Practice Makes Perfect

    This workshop provides participants the opportunity to improve their pronunciation and become more confident speakers.

    Upon completion of this workshop, the participants are expected to:

    • Know how to pronounce sounds of English
    • Speak with appropriate intonation, accent, and pausing
    • Be equipped with self-monitoring and assessment tools

    Developing Effective Oral & Intercultural Communication Skills

    This workshop is for nonnative English speakers who have sufficient command of English and would like to improve their communication skills.

    Participants will learn to:

    • Speak comfortably in small groups
    • Make themselves clearly understood early in a conversation
    • Present main ideas in a short period of time
    • Use appropriate body language
    • Talk within safe and appropriate personal space
    • Determine appropriate conversation topics and learn how to carry conversation without being offensive
    • Use safe strategies to avoid conflict when using a sensitive topic in a conversation

  • Turkish Faculty American Cultural and Professional Development Experience

    +

    • Provides academic instruction in speaking and listening, reading and writing, multimodal literacy, and optional courses in TOEFL test preparation
    • Provides opportunities to attend presentations on various intercultural topics and discuss pedagogy and research practices
    •  Includes: Housing, meals, local transportation, textbooks, all course instruction, evening and weekend trips, insurance
    •  Provides evening and weekend excursions to Chicago’s museums, restaurants, and historical sites. Trips to other Illinois historical and geographical locations will also be offered

  • Summer Young Adult Program

    +

    • Provides international young adults between the ages of 15-25 an opportunity to be immersed in the English language.
    • Provides English language instruction, workshops on American culture and history as well as cultural excursions
    • Offers opportunities to explore Chicago’s music, sports, theater, art, nature and shopping as well as the culture and community of the region
