Program Services
Counseling: Counseling provides students with guidance in finding solutions to personal problems, making social adjustments, and in developing an awareness of educational and career goals.
Students who need in-depth counseling will be referred to the Student Counseling Services.
Supplementary academic advisement: Assistance with selection of appropriate courses. During the semester, participants meet with the SEP staff to plan their academic goals based on university requirements, their academic advisor’s study plans, student learning styles, and interests.
Professional Development Activities: Students are encouraged to join study groups. This helps them establish a time meet, increase knowledge, and build an academic success support system. Students are also encouraged to participate in a field-based research project, and present at the SEP Appreciation Luncheon and/or a conference related to their field of study. This will increase networking opportunities within their field of study as well as increase their professional development. Participants also have the opportunity to participate in career counseling sessions, which will assist them with exploring careers, setting career goals, and developing job seeking skills.
Cultural and Social Activities: Students may participate in activities designed to develop an appreciation for diversity and promote personal and social development.
Tutoring: SEP encourages students to use the Academic Resource Center tutoring services for math, science, and business coursework. Students in need of additional tutoring will work with SEP and faculty to find an appropriate tutor.
Financial Aid Assistance: Students will also learn how to search for scholarships, grants, and employee assistance financial opportunities.
Workshops: Participants learn how to balance social, academic, and personal demands while in college and cope with issues that may hinder academic performance. SEP Workshops strengthen student skills and knowledge.
Mentoring: Students are encouraged to find a faculty member, staff, or peer mentor who can provide additional academic support and guidance during their academic careers at GSU.
