The Master of Health Science in Communication Disorders – Uniquely Designed


The Master of Health Science in Communication Disorders is uniquely designed. Unlike most speech-language pathology programs, our MHS has been developed and accredited without its own clinic. Our job isn’t to prepare you to work for us, but to ensure you’re ready to enter the profession with the background and experiences you need to step into real-world employment.

So all of your practicum work will be completed through our network of more than 150 practicum sites, providing a wide range of real-world experiences beyond the campus and in the types of communities you’ll be working in. You’ll gain experience in medical and school settings, putting your education to the test while gaining invaluable experience — and proving your abilities.

Comprehensive Curriculum


In Illinois and many other states, speech-language pathologists must be licensed professionals, and a comprehensive level of preparation is required to be eligible for licensure.

The MHS curriculum meets all academic and practicum requirements for the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech Language Pathology, the Illinois license in Speech Language Pathology, and the Illinois State Board of Education's licensure requirements for working in Illinois public schools.

The program is 55 (non-thesis) or 58 (thesis) credit hours.

Full or Part-Time Programs

Most students in the College of Health and Human Services are working adults. Therefore, our program is offered on either a part-time or full-time basis. Currently, about 50 percent of our graduate students attend part time. On average, part-time students take six credit hours (i.e., two academic courses) per term and complete the program in about three years. Full-time students take nine credits (i.e., three academic courses) per term and complete the program in about 2-1/3rd years. There is an expectation that all students will complete degree requirements within five years of admission.

Competitive Admission 

Admission to the MHS program is competitive, and only a limited number of applicants will be admitted. Each applicant’s strengths are evaluated using a number of factors associated with successful completion of our program.

Fully Accredited

The Master of Health Sciences in the Communication Disorders program at Governors State University is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, 2200 Research Boulevard #310, Rockville, Maryland 20850-3289, 800-498-2071 or 301-296-5700. The period of accreditation extends from November 1, 2007 through October 31, 2015.

Graduates meet all academic and practicum requirements for the ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology. This major also meets the academic requirements for licensure in speech-language pathology in the state of Illinois.

The program also is approved by the Illinois State Board of Education and meets academic requirements for the School Service Personnel Certificate (Type 73) endorsed in non-teaching Speech-Language Pathology.
