    Basic Personal Tax Return class will assist you in preparing your own basic tax return online.   

     

    Includes the use of a software program to prepare and efile your own personal return in class only. Your tax return will be reviewed for proper tax law, credits, and health care insurance related issues.  (No schedule E (rental income, very limited schedule C, self-employed with nominal income)

     
    Bring all W2’s, 1099T, 1099A, all of your tax documents required to file your tax returns.  You will need all dependents social security cards, a photo ID, and if e-filing return if married spouse must come in the last 10-15 minutes of class to sign for permission to e-file the return electronically, otherwise you will be given a paper copy to have signed and you will be responsible for mailing both federal & state return.

    Description: The final course of the series will be a complete Lean Six Sigma Project from inception to completion. This course will prepare the student to lead a selected project while continuously training team members along with leading a change event.  The student will possess a thorough understanding of all aspects of DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control).  All statistical tools will be reviewed including graphs and illustrations of real-life discussions, benchmarks and events.  This course will encompass the methodologies learned in both the Yellow and Green Belt certification.  In addition it will include new processes that will be required for project success. Statistical software will be utilized that will assist the student in establishing objectives for decision making.  This intensive course will encompass a real-life project with clear objectives and details outlined in the project charter.  Milestones and "project check-in's" will be conducted with one-on-one meetings throughout the class with the instructor.  

    Students can expect, upon completion of their project, to demonstrate a significant improvement in their selected process.  Also, as a Certified Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, the student will be prepared to lead future events using the tools and methodologies obtained in this class.  This Lean Six Sigma series can be utilized in any industry or marketplace.  

    Pre-requisite: Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification.  Certification from outside firms must be reviewed in detail to ensure they meet the prerequisite for Governors State University Black Belt Certification.

    LANDSCAPES OF THE NATIONAL PARKS

    In this Geography class we will focus on the physical landscapes of some of the most scenic spots in the United States including Yellowstone, Yosemite, Denali, Death Valley, The Grand Canyon, the Canyonlands, Glacier National Park and many more.  Using the National Geographic audiovisual series National Parks as the basis for the course, we will examine the geology, the flora and fauna of each park as well as the human impact on the land.

    CINEMA STUDIES: JANE EYRE AND EDWARD ROCHESTER AS CHARACTERS IN FILM

    Class Leader: Suzanne Patterson  

    A lifetime member of the Brontë Society, Suzanne blends her passion for cinema with her unique understanding of the Brontë authors with this visual study of the principle characters of Charlotte Brontë's gothic novel Jane Eyre as portrayed on film through the decades.  In addition to screening various filmed versions of the novel, class will also analyze and compare related texts and Brontë poetry as we delve into the origins of the psyche of Jane Eyre and Edward Rochester.  NOTE: Class start time is 9:30am

    CHASING CHAUCER: THE CANTERBURY TALES

    Class Leader:  D. Stanley Moore   

    Stan Moore returns with more thought provoking reading with a study of Chaucer's Tales!  This class will sample the Middle English, the Prologue and the Retraction, reading and discussing a Chaucer-tale-a-week: Knight's, Miller's, Nun's Priest's, Pardoner's, Wife of Bath's, Merchant's, and Parsons.  Class will examine such themes as the anxiety of influence, anal themes, Cupiditas and Caritas, sacred and profane love, the idea of the Pilgrimage, misogyny and its reversal, dream theory, deadly sins and redemptive remedies, authority and experience, freedom and necessity, Lady Fortune and her Wheel, bulls and balls.  Satire of Biblical themes and clerical personalities will not be avoided!  Other tales may be chosen by class participants if so inspired for class presentation.  A reading of the Pardoner's Tale is recommended before the first class.  (Preferred Text: Geoffrey Chaucer, Canterbury Tales, Nevil Coghill, translator / Penguin 2003).
