CBPA Welcomes New Faculty
CBPA Welcomes New Faculty for Fall 2012 Chun-Wei Chang, Assistant Professor of Marketing: Dr. Chang was born in Taipei, Taiwan. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics at the National Chengchi University and a MBA with a concentration in Marketing from National Taiwan University. She then entered the University of Michigan Ann Arbor in the fall of 2003 and earned a Master of Science in Statistics in 2005. In 2012 she earned degrees of Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Washington in Business Administration. Chun-Wei Chang’s present research interests lie in quantitative modeling, empirical application of econometrics and statistics in issues relating to multichannel retailing, choice modeling, preference evolution, customer retention and churn, and broad areas of customer relationship management. Chun-Wei’s goal is to produce high-quality, innovative research and teaching bin marketing that aims to resolve business-related problems.
Natalia Ermasova, Assistant Professor of Public Administration: Natalia Ermasova previously defended the Doctoral dissertation “Methodology of Management of investments risks” in Saratov State Technical University (Russia) in 2005. She defended the PhD dissertation “Regulation of monopolies in transition time in Russia” in Saratov State University (Russia) in 1995. A PhD Candidate in School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University (Majors: Public Finance and Public Administration. Minor: Strategic Management at Kelly School of Business) Natalia Ermasova worked as a Professor in the Volga region Academy for Civil Services (Russia) for 12 years. Additionally, she had been working as Professor in Saratov State University (Russia) for 2 years. She won World Bank’s grant, Fulbright program grant, DAAD program grant, Andrew W. Mellon Foundation grant. She has published a total of around 45 works (books and articles) in Russia. Her 5 textbooks are recommended by Russian Ministry of Education for students who study Public Finance, Finance, Insurance, Financial Management, and Innovation Management in the Russian Universities.
Xinghua Gao, Assistant Professor of Finance: Dr. Gao was a visiting Professor of Finance at GSU last year, and this year was hired to the tenure track faculty. Xinghua is a Ph.D. Candidate in Finance from Wayne State University.. He earned his MBA in 2004 and M.S. in Accounting in 2007. His research interests include corporate dividend policy, economic deregulation, accounting quality, corporate governance and executive compensation. He teaches courses of corporate finance, investment management, and derivatives.
Mike Trendell, Instructor of Accounting: Over the previous several years, Mike was the Director of Internal Audit at Delnor-Community Hospital in Geneva, Illinois and the Director of Internal Audit and Director of Accounting at Centegra Health System in McHenry, Illinois. In addition, Mike was responsible for the LEAN Continuous Improvement process at Centegra working with all hospital departments to streamline processes and eliminate waste. Mike has 13 years of Internal Audit experience with the majority of it in health care. Prior to Delnor and Centegra, Mike worked in Internal Audit at the University of Chicago Hospitals and Rush University Medical Center. Mike is a Certified Public Accountant, Certified Internal Auditor and has earned a MBA degree specializing in Accounting from Loyola University Chicago. Mike has also been an Accounting Instructor for 15 years at various Chicago Universities & Colleges with the last five years at DePaul University in Chicago, teaching both graduate and undergraduate accounting and auditing courses.
Michael Williams, Assistant Professor of Finance: Dr. Williams received his Bachelor of Science in Economics (Finance and Mathematics minors) and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Southern Indiana. He received his Master of Arts in Applied Economics (Data Analysis concentration) from the University of Cincinnati and a PhD in Business Administration (Finance concentration) from the University of Texas at San Antonio. Michael's current research interests include investments and market microstructure in general as well as commodity and currency derivatives, in particular.
GSU CBPA Accounting Graduate wins Elijah Watt Sells Award
2008 GSU Accounting (BS) graduate Ryan F. Williamson was awarded the 2009 Elijah Watt Sells Award from the AICPA. The award, founded in 1923 and named after one of New York’s first CPAs, recognizes the top CPA exam scores in the country and means honor and recognition for those talented enough at variances and construction statements of cash flows under a time crunch to score in the high 90s on all four parts of the exam.
Of the 93,000 people tested to become a CPA in 2009, 15 people were awarded the Elijah Watt Sells Award in 2009. Click here to view the AICPA Press Release.
He is currently employed at Groskreutz, Schmidt, Abraham, Eshleman & Gerretse in Kankakee.

Delta Mu Delta International Honor Society
The third annual induction for Delta Mu Delta was held on March 30, 2011 in the Center for Performing Arts. Seventeen new members were officially inducted and recognized.
Twenty-seven business students were installed on May 17, 2010 at the second annual induction ceremony of GSU’s newly-organized chapter of Delta Mu Delta, an international honor society that recognizes scholastic achievement in business.
New officers for the Lambda Delta Chapter include: Ashleigh Hostert, President; Monique Burey-Ballard, Vice-President; and Kelly Vos as Secretary and Treasurer. The new advisor of the Lambda Delta Chapter is Dr. William Wilkinson.
Dr. Ellen Foster Curtis, Dean of the College of Business and Public Administration, gave the welcoming address at the ceremony. Honorary inductees included Ms. Lorine S. Samuels, Chair, GSU Board of Trustees; and Dr. William Wilkinson, CBPA Professor. Ms. Samuels was keynote speaker for the evening. Rich Sosnowski, Delta Mu Delta representative, gave the closing remarks. Delta Mu Delta, with more than 200 chapters at accredited business schools in the United States and abroad, promotes higher scholarship in training for business and recognizes scholastic achievement in business subjects. To be eligible for membership, the academic ranking of business students under consideration must place them in the upper 20 percent or higher in their respective class. Juniors, seniors, and graduate students are eligible for membership. While more than 600,000 students worldwide receive business degrees each year, less than 10 percent are elected to membership in Delta Mu Delta.
APICS Student Case Competition
The APICS club members Danielle Layden and Monica Zaczyk (undergraduate students) along with Gracia Martinez and Alethia Pollard (MBA students) participated in the 2011 Student Chapter Case Competition held by the APICS-Chicago Chapter October 18, 2011. Four teams took part – IIT, Loyola, Northeastern Illinois, and Governors State. The students were given a case about a poorly performing manufacturing company, and they were required to make recommendation from the point of view of a consultant. GSU came in a very close second place behind IIT. Congratulations to Dr. John Simon and his students!
Monica Zaczyk was selected by the APICS Chicago Chapter as a student scholar and she attended the APICS International Conference in Pittsburgh in October 2011.

Xinghua Gao – Visiting Professor, Finance
Xinghua came to Governors Statue University from The School of Business Administration at Wayne State University. Xinghua earned a MBA, a MS in Accounting, and is a Ph.D. Candidate in Finance from Wayne State University. Xinghua teaches corporate finance, investment management, and derivatives.
YoungHong Jia – Assistant Professor, Accounting
YoungHong came to Governors Statue University from the School from Business Administration at Wayne State University. YoungHong has years of professional experience in the fields of accounting and business valuation. She is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and a Certified Public Valuer (CPV) in China. She taught Corporate Finance and Investments there and has research interests in accounting. She earned her MS in Accounting and Ph.D. in Finance from Wayne State University.
Evelina Mengova – Assistant Professor, Economics
Evelina earned a MA in Economics from Sofia University and another MA in Economics from Central European University in Budapest, Hungary. She earned her Ph.D. in Economics from Georgetown University. Before coming to GSU she taught Economics at California State University – Fullerton. She also was a consultant on various projects at the World Bank in Washington D.C.
Praggyan Mohanty – Assistant Professor, Marketing
Praggyan (Pam) has an MBA in Marketing from The Institute for Technology and Management, Mumbai, India and a Ph.D. in Business Administration- Marketing from The University of Missouri. Before starting her Ph.D. program, she worked in advertising at Lowe Lintas India and in market research at AC Nielsen India. She has taught Consumer Behavior and worked in industry as a Senior Research Executive.
Stephen Wagner – Assistant Professor, Management
Stephen held various HR positions in both the corporate and public sector. He was previously the Executive Director of Organizational Learning at Grand Rapids Community College and the Director of Industrial/Organizational Psychology Graduate Programs at Central Michigan University. He earned both a MA and a Ph.D. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from Northern Illinois University.
Jun Zhan – Assistant Professor, Accounting
Jun came to Governors Statue University from Charlton College of Business and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth where she was an Assistant Professor of Accounting. She earned a MA in Accounting from Wuhan University in China and holds a Ph.D. in Accounting from Concordia University in Canada. She teaches Financial, Managerial and Intermediate Accounting.

Carlos Ferran, DBA - Assistant Professor of MIS
Before coming to Governors State Dr. Ferran taught at Penn State, Rochester Institute of Technology, and Boston University. Before joining academia he had a successful industry career in Venezuela. He started by developing accounting applications for the Apple II and his last industry job was as a CIO at a financial institution in Venezuela. Through his industry career he worked in the oil, software, and financial industry for many years.
Olu Ijose, Ph.D. - Assistant Professor of Management
Dr. Ijose comes to Governors State University from Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania where he was an Associate Professor of Management. After earning his Ph.D. in 1989 and working as an Assistant Professor at Hampton University, he left academia in 1991 to join the then Andersen Consulting as a Change Management Consultant.
Susan Ji, Ph.D. - Associate Professor of Finance
Dr. Ji received her Ph.D. in Finance from Arizona State University and she was at Baruch College before joining Governors State University. Dr. Ji’s research interests are empirical asset pricing, inter-national finance, and behavioral finance. She has published research in the Journal of Finance, Journal of Portfolio Management, International Journal of Business and Economics, and other academic journals.
Brian J. McKenna, JD, LL.M (Tax), MBA - Assistant Professor of Accounting
Professor McKenna is a licensed attorney practicing law for over 30 years. He has successfully passed the CPA, CFA, and CFP exams. He is a former IRS agent and experienced corporate tax litigator who has successfully tried tax cases in the US Tax Court, US District Court, and US Claims Court and has successfully argued tax appeals before various US Courts of Appeal.
Gökçe Sargut, Ph.D. - Assistant Professor of Management
Dr. Sargut's research and teaching interests center around organiza-tion theory and strategic management. He received his Ph.D. from Columbia University's Graduate School of Management. He also holds an MBA degree from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prior to joining the faculty at Governors State University, Professor Sargut taught in the Economics Department at The City College of New York.
Robert Sinclair, MBA and ABD - Instructor of Management and Entrepreneurship
Robert Sinclair has an extensive background in the automotive industry, including 10 years as production and logistics manager and 7 years as operations manager. These experiences culminated in the creation of two new entrepreneurial ventures, one manufacturing; supplying automotive parts, such as, sunroof brackets, rear view mirror housings, and window turn handles for General Motors, Ford, Chrysler, and Nissan; the other producing and distributing the Ultra-Box™, utilized by over 90 percent of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) industry.
