Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Education - Licensure Sequence
The Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Education at Governors State University prepares you for a successful career as a classroom teacher for children from birth through third grade. Courses expand your knowledge of primary curricula and teaching methodology while providing strong preparation in the knowledge, skills and dispositions reflective of the professional standards identified by the NAEYC and
NCATE accrediting agencies.
GSU’s Early Childhood Education study sequence provides an integrated academic approach connecting theory to on-site field applications. You also have the opportunity to observe and work with infants, toddlers and pre-schoolers at GSU’s Family Development Center, a university-owned and operated facility designed by educators to meet the learning and comfort needs of children.
The ECE program is fully approved by the Illinois State Board of Education for teacher certification and early childhood special education approval.

This program is approved by the Illinois State Board of Education for recommendation of the Professional Educator License by entitlement. Students completing this program may also obtain the Early Childhood Special Education Approval on their certificates. The program offers four courses required for this approval:
EDEC3380, EDEC4440/4441, EDEC4450/4451, and EDEC4430.
To be recommended for an Illinois State Board of Education license, the candidate must
present evidence of having passed the Basic Skills or Test of Academic Proficiency (TAP), Content Area, and Assessment of Professional Teaching examinations of the Illinois Teaching Certification Testing System. Candidates must meet other requirements for licensure through approved programs listed in
the Teacher Education and Certification section in the GSU catalog.
After meeting the university admission requirements, students must meet the following requirements to
continue in the Early Childhood Education program:
• Admittance to Governors State University and good academic standing.
• Present transcripts showing a cumulative G.P.A. of 2.5 or higher in all undergraduate work attempted.
• A grade of “B” or better in all transferable teacher education courses (completed within six years).
• Complete all course work at Governors State University within five calendar years.
• Present evidence of having passed the Basic Skills Test or the Test of Academic Proficiency of the Illinois
Certification Testing System.
• Complete the ETS Proficiency Profile.
• Earn a grade of “B” or better in the following courses taken at GSU: EDEC3371 Effective Teaching
and Laboratory for Early Childhood Majors**, EDEC3310 Foundations of Early Childhood
Education and EDEC3320 Growth and Development of Young Children.
• Receive a positive recommendation from the Early Childhood Education faculty to continue in the

All candidates for Illinois licensure at Governors State University are required to submit the GSU approved criminal background check prior to their initial field experience in the schools. Admission to Lab Courses
Before enrolling in lab courses EDEC4441, EDEC4451,EDEC4481, or EDEC4491 students must:
1. Submit to their advisor verification of a passing score on the Illinois Basic Skills Exam or Test of Academic Proficiency.
2. Before entering labs 3 (EDEC4481) and 4 (EDEC4491), complete the general education requirements of
ENGL2910, MCOM4250, MATH2131, and MATH2141 (or equivalent courses) along with one science and
one social science course with a grade of “C” or better.
3. Successfully complete all prerequisite course work, as stated on a student’s study plan.
4. Maintain a cumulative 2.75 general education G.P.A.
5. Continue to maintain a 3.0 professional education G.P.A.
Admission to Student Teaching
Before enrolling in student teaching, students must:
1. Complete at least 48-49 hours of general education requirements with a G.P.A. of 2.75 or higher (for courses taken at GSU) with a grade of “C” or better in each course.
2. Complete all professional education course requirements with a G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher with a grade of
“B” or better in each of the following courses EDEC3371, EDEC3310, EDEC3320, and Lab courses
one to four (1-4), and a grade of “C” or better in all other courses.
3. Complete a minimum of 100 clock-hours of pre-student teaching field experiences.
4. Have no more than a total of nine approved general education/specialization hours outstanding.
5. Verify successful completion of the early childhood content area state examination of the Illinois
Certification Testing System.
I. Early Childhood Certificate (48-49 Hours)
Course work acceptable for meeting these requirements must be college level work and may not include remedial courses even if college credit is granted. Generally, this course work must be at the 100-level or higher and applicable toward a degree at the institution providing the instruction. Courses with grades below “C” will not be accepted toward the degree.
