Governors State University Foundation and Alumni Association scholarship funding recognizes academic excellence and is awarded to assist deserving students in their pursuit of a GSU degree. During the Academic Year 2013-2014, more than $110,000 in scholarship aid was provided to GSU students via this in-house program.

Scholarship offerings for any given year are determined from a large list of scholarships, each of which has its own criteria and funding level. In addition, the number and scale of scholarships vary from year to year, based on available funds.

Please review eligibility, criteria, and deadlines for scholarships carefully. Students are responsible for submitting required documentation, including an application form (see Guidelines and Application below)on time and in a professional manner. Be sure to FOLLOW DIRECTIONS.

    David Bernstein Endowed Scholarship in English  

    Award:                                 One at $500 

    Eligibility:

        • Undergraduate majors in English or English education
        • Minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA
        • Must have completed two trimesters at GSU
        • Enrolled (or about to enroll) in a minimum of 6 credit hours

        Documentation Required:

          Essay (500 words) describing qualifications, emphasizing your contributions to the English division through classroom participation and tutoring.

          Jassac Charitable Foundation Scholarship Honoring Lorine S. Samuels

          Award:                                 Two at $500 (Follett Gift Card)

          Eligibility:

          • Must be an undergraduate degree seeking student
          • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 from GSU or most recent school
          • Must be enrolled (or enrolling) in a minimum of six credit hours
          • African American student preferred

          Documentation Required:

            • Essay (500 words) outlining your career aspirations.

            The Wade Scholarship (Criminal Justice)

            Award:                                 One at $500

            Eligibility: 

                • Degree-seeking student in good academic standing;
                • Pursuing a degree in criminal justice
                • Minimum 2.5 GPA and be in good academic standing
                • Enrolled (or about to enroll) in a minimum of 6 credit hour
                • Financial need may be considered but is not a requirement
                •  Recipient must attend a banquet in the spring by the South Suburban Association of Chiefs of Police

                  Documentation Required:  

                    • Essay (1,000 words) discussing any personal information, academic, professional, or philanthropic goals that the applicant deems pertinent

                    Dental Personnel Placement Service, Inc. Community Service Scholarship

                    Award:                                 One at $500

                    Eligibility: 

                    • Must be a transfer student from Prairie State College’s Dental Hygiene Program;
                    • Must be seeking an undergraduate degree in Science;
                    • Must be a degree seeking student enrolled (or enrolling) in a minimum of 6 credit hours.

                    Documentation Required:  

                    • Must submit a letter of reference for volunteer service, preferably in the dental field;
                    • Submit a 500 word essay on why you chose your field of study

                    Henne and Kovach Family Award in Chemistry

                    Award:                                One at $500

                    Eligibility:

                    • Degree seeking student in the College of Arts and Sciences;
                    • Must enroll in or have taken Bio-Chemistry 5331 (with a C or better);
                    • Enrolled (or about to enroll) in a minimum of 6 credit hours
                    • Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA

                    Documentation Required:                                                                                                            

                      • Essay (500 words) describing how you feel bio-chemistry will impact your career choice.

                      Mathematics Student Teaching Scholarship

                      Award:                                 One at $1,000

                      Eligibility:

                      • Degree seeking or Mathematics Certificate student.
                      • Enrolled in EDUC 4999 course or be approved for Student Teaching
                      • Enrolled (or about to enroll) in a minimum of 12 credit hours
                      • Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA
                      • United States citizen.

                        Documentation Required: 

                          • Submit a copy of your essay (two pages – 1” margins) that was submitted for admission into the student teaching program that describes your Philosophy of Education, Mathematics Education. This paper reflects your beliefs about teaching and learning as developed during your coursework and during the student teaching experience. Your essay will be reviewed from the aspects of GSU Professional Education Unit’s conceptual framework addressing areas of knowledge, skills, and dispositions included in your paper. Your beliefs about mathematics teaching will also be reviewed.

                            Success in Mathematics Scholarship

                            Award:                       Five at $1,000

                            Eligibility:

                            • Degree seeking Mathematics student (BA or MA)
                            • Enrolled or about to enroll in a minimum of 6 credit hours
                            • Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA
                            • Minority and women preferred but not required

                            Documentation Required:

                              American Logistics Association Endowed Scholarship

                              Award:                                 Two at $1,000

                              Eligibility:

                              • Undergraduate and graduate CBPA students in pursuit of a career in logistics, business administration or accounting
                              • Must be a veteran or active in the military or a federal civil service employee, or be a dependent of a veteran with an honorable discharge or a dependent of a federal civil service employee.
                              • Must also be a member of a household within a 50-mile radius of Chicago.

                              Documentation Required:

                              • Essay (500 words) covering observance of restrictions, experience in logistics, and academic/career aspirations in logistics-related field.
                              • Two letters of recommendation from a GSU faculty member and/or administrator, or from employment supervisors

                              CN Rail Fellowship Award

                              Award:                 One at $2,500 ($1,500 for Spring and $1,000 for Fall, 2015)

                              Eligibility:

                              • Degree seeking student enrolled (or enrolling) in the Online MBA Program in Supply Chain Management at Governors State University
                              • Enrolled (or about to enroll) in a minimum of 6 credit hours
                              • Minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.25
                              • Financial need is not a criterion

                              Documentation Required:

                              • Essay (500 to 1,000 words) discussing your experience, if any, in supply chain management, career aspirations, and why you have chosen this field of study
                              • A resume
                              • Two letters of reference attesting to academic excellence and/or professional accomplishments are required.

                              • Preference is given to those who intend to work in schools in underserved areas
                              • Must be enrolled (or enrolling)in a minimum of 6 credit hours

                              Ralph R. and Dolores Turner Endowed Scholarship in Elementary Education

                              Award:                                 Two at $1,000

                              Eligibility:

                              • Must be a returning African-American student, at least 30 years in age
                              • Degree seeking student in Elementary Education
                              • Undergraduate student in good academic standing
                              • Enrolled (or about to enroll) in a minimum of 6 credit hours
                              • Substantiate an active commitment to, and involvement in, community service.
                              • Resident of Illinois and a United States citizen

                              • Financial need is a criterion (a FAFSA form is required)

                              GSU Foundation Scholarship Instructions and Guidelines

                              Important Scholarship Information:

                              • Financial need scholarships require that a FASFA be on file at the time of application
                              • Only one GSU Foundation scholarship may be awarded per academic year
                              • All scholarships are applied to tuition and fees only, unless otherwise stated in the criteria, up to the maximum award. Unused funds will continue to be applied to the student's account for subsequent semesters during the same academic year, provided student continues to meet the minimum eligibility requirements.
                              • A student is allowed to receive a tuition waiver and a scholarship up to but not to exceed the cost of tuition and fees.  Unused funds may be applied to subsequent semesters as outlined in the paragraph above.
                              • Tuition payments - If you have not received official notification about your scholarship status by the tuition due date, you need to sign a tuition payment plan agreement and make the required payment. If you are awarded a scholarship after you've made a payment, your overpayment, if any, will be refunded to you if your scholarship award exceeds your balance due.
                              • Scholarships are rescinded if the student falls below the minimum number of hours required
                              • Community Honors Scholars and employees of the university are not eligible.
