1. How do I reach my advisor? 

The CBPA advisors are always available to help students. Your advisor is available for meetings in person, by phone or e-mail. If you leave an advisor a message they will respond in a timely fashion. We encourage you to make an appointment to meet with your advisor by calling 708.534.4391.

2. When do graduate students apply for Candidacy? 

Graduate students are required to apply for candidacy after completion of a minimum of nine (9) hours of core requirements and a maximum of twelve (12) hours of approved graduate (Core or Elective) credits. Contact the advising office by calling 708.534.4391 to verify your eligibility.

3. When should I apply for graduation? 

You should apply for graduation at the beginning of your last semester.  Instructions for the graduation application process are available from the Registrar`s website at www.govst.edu/graduation . Diplomas are mailed eight weeks after successful completion of  your final semester.

4. May I fill out the graduation application online?

5. Who submits a graduation application? 

All students expecting to graduate must have a completed graduation application in to the registrar by the graduation deadline.

6. Are there scholarships, graduate assistantships and tuition waivers available for CBPA students? 

There are specific scholarships, graduate assistantships and tuition waivers available for CBPA students; visit http://www.govst.edu/cbpa/t_cbpa_resources.aspx?id=146 for details about opportunities for CBPA students.

CBPA awards up to nine tuition waivers each semester. Tuition waivers are awarded to a maximum of:
3 unrestricted undergraduate students
3 unrestricted graduate students
3 restricted to graduate minority students

When are tuition waivers due?
Fall - August 1
Spring- December 15
Summer- May 1

7. What employment opportunities are available for my major? 

If you are looking for a job-whether full-time or part-time-the Office of Career Services (located near the fitness center in A1120) can assist you. They are a resource center for job seekers, providing a wide range of services available to currently enrolled students free of charge. 8. How do I find an internship? 

Students receive assistance in their search for internships by working with career advisors. They also have the opportunity to review the career services internship binder or the e-Recruiting Online System. Students should also check the binder located outside the advising offices (G281) for other internship opportunities.

9. How do I find out if a course is cancelled? 

Access the online class schedule on the menu bar at the top of the page, cancelled courses will be reflected. Also visit http://classes.govst.edu/Pages/SectionsHome.aspx

10. The class I need to take is full. What should I do? 

If the course has met its quota, the student must e-mail the professor and asked permission to join the class.  If the professor approves then he/she will send that correspondence to a representative in the Registrar’s Office so that the student can be added to the class.  To e-mail any GSU professor, in general, just take the first initial of the first name, include the entire last name and finally after the @ add the ending govst.edu

11. Where are computer labs located? 

The ACS Lab provides microcomputer facilities for use by GSU students, faculty, and staff. In addition to its open lab area, ACS offers five classrooms for credited courses and workshops. The ACS Lab is located on the second floor of the D Wing, just past the library in room D2431.

13. Who do I contact when I need help with Blackboard? 

Go to the eLearning information page (http://www.govst.edu/elearning/) and click on the Help menu at the top. If you have further questions, please call the Helpdesk at 708-534-4357 .

14. I am taking classes off campus. Where do I buy books?
After registering, study guides and textbooks may be purchased from or ordered by phone from Follett's GSU Bookstore: 708-534-4558 or 1-877-525-6578.

15. When should I contact an academic advisor? 

  • If you have questions about your study plan or transfer credit
  • If you are thinking about changing your concentration or adding a second concentration
  • If you are thinking about changing your program or adding a second program
  • If you are wondering which courses to take or if a certain course will count toward your degree
  • If you have questions regarding the program
  • If you experience changes in your life that may effect your program, such as change in job, medical, or family problems

In the unlikely event that you have a conflict with a course, professor, or grade, an advisor could help you decide your next step.

17. Is Financial Aid available? 

Financial assistance in the form of scholarships, loans, federal and state aid, and student employment is available. Financial aid is available even to part-time students (a minimum of 6 credit hours is required). For more information on financial aid, see http://www.govst.edu/AdmissFinAid/t_finaid.aspx?id=922

18. How do I register for classes? 

Log on to the Student Web Information System and follow the instructions for login and for registration. When registering online, you must enter the course and section number. Online registration is accessible 24 hours a day.

19. How do I withdraw from a class? 

Occasionally, it becomes necessary for a student to withdraw from a class. It is critical that you review the Academic Calendar for each term for withdrawal deadlines http://www.govst.edu/academiccalendar. Withdrawals can be done online (708.235.8887).

20. Can I get a refund? 

You can get a refund for early withdrawal or from dropping a course within the approved timeline. The refund period of each term is listed in the paper schedule of classes and in the Academic Calendar and if you have other questions, you may call the Cashiers’ Office at 708-534-4055.
