Governors State University Announces New Provost
President Elaine P. Maimon Names Dr. Deborah Bordelon to Post of Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs
University Park, IL, June 5, 2013 - After an extensive national search, GSU has named one of its own to serve as the university’s new provost. In making the announcement, Dr. Maimon pointed to Dr. Bordelon’s distinguished service to GSU. “Under Dr. Bordelon’s leadership our College of Education has received praise from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education in terms unprecedented in my experience,” said Dr. Maimon. “At this pivotal moment in GSU’s history, Dr. Bordelon is fully prepared in background and character to do an outstanding job as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. As GSU moves toward the admission of freshmen and the opening of our first residence facility, Deborah Bordelon is the right academic leader for Renaissance 2014,” she added.
Prior to joining GSU in 2008 Dr. Bordelon served as Dean of the College of Education at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, Louisiana. Since 2008 she has served as Dean of the College of Education; in 2011 she was named Dean of Graduate Studies. Dr. Bordelon was instrumental in establishing the doctoral degree program for Counselor Education and Supervision and the doctoral degree program in Interdisciplinary Leadership. Under her supervision the Family Development Center at GSU received the highest possible accreditation for early childhood centers. She currently co-chairs the Council of Chicago Area Deans of Education.
Dr. Bordelon received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees and Ph.D. from the University of New Orleans. In addition to her scholarly work in special education and reading, she has a particular interest in high impact education practices, critical and creative thinking and in literacy education.
“I am truly honored to be selected for this position. This is an exciting time on our campus as we transform to a full-service university, with first-year students and on-campus housing. I look forward to collaborating with the faculty, staff, administration and community members to bring this renaissance to life. I would especially like to express my appreciation to Dr. Terry Allison, our current provost, for his leadership in laying the groundwork for the development and expansion of programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels,” said Dr. Bordelon.
Governors State University, the only public university in the Chicago Southland region, serves more than 7,000 students in undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and certificate programs. In 2014, GSU will become a fully accredited four-year university, admitting its first freshman class and introducing apartment and suite-style student housing.
