David & Barbara Barr Endowed Scholarship

 

David Barr has been a member of the GSU Foundation since 1976, service as president from 1994 to 1997 and in other executive capacities before and since then. An attorney with a practice in Matteson, he has been active in public school affairs since 1971, serving as a member and in a leadership role on the Boards of Education for both Matteson District 162 and Rich Township High School District 227. This scholarship was established in his honor at the end of his term as president of the GSU Foundation in 1997. It is offered to students who are already teaching or are training to become teachers, especially those acquiring special skills to serve in schools with diverse student populations.


Eligibility:

  • Must be a degree-seeking undergraduate student, full or part time.
  • Preference will be given to students enrolled in the School of Education or have otherwise announced an intention to pursue a career in elementary or secondary education in the South Suburbs of Chicago, IL and in the eastern portions of Will County, IL.
  • Preference will also be given to students who are currently teachers in elementary or secondary students in the Service Area.
  • Financial need and scholastic achievement shall be considered in awarding scholarships.
  • All recipients must be enrolled for a minimum of 6 credit hours

Not Eligible:

  • Community honors scholars
  • Employees of the University

Documents Required:

  1. Submit an essay (500 words) indicating how you will use your degree to pursue a career in elementary or secondary education in the south suburbs of Chicago or in the eastern portions of Will County.
  2. Essay should also outline your scholastic achievements and financial need.

Note: Award amounts may vary based on funding, availability, and addition, if any, to principal. Amount awarded shall not exceed tuition costs.
