CAREERS
The Family Development Center (FDC) at Governors State University is a NAEYC Accredited Early Childhood Program providing lab quality education and care for children ages six weeks to eight years old in our infant, preschool, and school age programs. We are funded by Early Head Start, Preschool for all, Preschool Expansion, and child care fees.
The mission of the FDC is to provide an exceptional education that implements best practices for children, an innovative learning environment for GSU students, and a network of support for the families we serve.
Our program is a division of the College of Education and we are located across from the main campus amidst the beautiful Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park. Our building design was inspired by the Reggio Emilia Approach with lots of natural light and access to nature. Our building houses three large greenhouses with sandboxes, dedicated playgrounds for each age group, and a gym for inclement weather. In addition, we draw on university programming such as the Sculpture Park, Center for Performing Arts, organic farm fields, community garden, and butterfly ranch to enrich our learning environment.
The FDC staff are our greatest asset. We provide 10 professional development days a year, in addition to a preservice week in the fall. Staff engage in committees such as our Wellness, Spirit, and Diversity Committees to create celebrations and ensure an environment that promotes staff wellness and equity.
Benefits include flexible schedules and discounted child care in addition to State of Illinois Benefits provided by GSU.
