Student leadership programs shape tomorrow’s leaders

Students receive certificates for completing this year's student leadership programs

GSU’s second annual student leadership programs – the Student Leadership Institute and the Graduate Leadership Scholars – came to a close Tuesday, March 4, as about 50 undergraduate and graduate students were recognized for their participation in the program.

In a ceremony in E-Lounge, students received certificates following weeks of attending intensive leadership workshops. The workshops were designed to address the five exemplary leadership practices that centered around the framework entitled “The Student Leadership Challenge” by James Kouzes and Barry Posner. The students’ mentors – mostly GSU faculty, administrators, and staff – were also recognized for their guidance during the program.

Students Cezanne Shannon and Mirabel Wiryen, along with mentor Dennis Dent, Jr., coordinator for campus programs and community service, discussed the focus and direction participating in this program provided them.

Student Amanda Ziaja and her mentor Jeff Stevenson, director of The Art Gallery, discussed their experiences during the program. “This made me look at leadership in a different light,” she said.

Undergraduate participants in the program were: Yomi Abraham, Dorota Allen, Critisha Ashley, Terri Baker, Chaundra Barber, Cherish Brown, Adrianna Cadena, Lisa Davis, Juana De Loera, Adreanna Doizan, Gloria Dotson-Lewis, Brian W. Drummond, Angel Green-Cholke, Melvin Hayes, Kristi Hendershott, Manar Jaber, Addison Jackson Jr., Annetta Jones-Morgan, Jeremy Joyce, Archana Liggins, Ricca Louissaint, Avalon Marciniak, Cheryl McClure-Johnson, Heather McKenna, Monique Mobley, Douglas Nanfeldt, Aviance Richard, Candice Robbins, Navarra Scott, Doria Scott, Cezanne Shannon, Sharita Walker, Yulonda Whisby, Mirabel Wiryen, and Amanda Ziaja.

Graduate students in the program were Michelle Adeniyi, Sheena Aikens , Sandra Alvarado, Josephine Anetekhai, Charles E. Barwegen, Jr., Yvonne Chism, Carla Davis, Paula Franklin, Michael Grammer, William E Joyce, William Moore, Diana Muhammad, Janel Riddick, and Tenille Wallace.
