Governors State University has an active sports program which includes nine competitive intercollegiate varsity sport teams along with intramural club teams.  If you are interested in becoming a student-athlete at GSU, and would like more information, please complete our prospective student-athlete interest form. Anthony Bates, Athletic Director and Head Men's Basketball Coach

Bates PhotoAnthony “Tony” Bates embarks on his fifth season as head men's basketball coach at Governors State University, being named to the post on July 1, 2014.   Coach Bates comes to us from St. Xavier University where he was theAssociate Head Men’s Basketball Coach for 14 years.  He previously worked as an athletics director and coach at Tabernacle Christian Academy for 15 years.

Coach Bates earned his bachelor of science degree in business administration and marketing from Trinity Christian College (Ill.) in 1988.  In 2013, he earned a master's degree in athletics administration from Northcentral University (Ariz.).  Bates also played basketball at Trinity Christian and was the nation's fifth leading scorer during his sophomore year.


In four season at GSU, Bates has recorded seven wins over Top 25 teams and compiled a 39-22 (.639) record in CCAC play.  Bates was named 2018 CACC Co-Coach of the Year after leading the Jaguars to the CACC regular season and tournament titles.  Bates guided the Jaguars to a school-record 11 game winning streak and to 12 consecutive wins on its home court.

Tonishea Mack, Assistant Athletic Director and Head Women's Basketball Coach

Tonisha Mack begins her second season as head women's basketball coach and assistant athletics director at Governors State.  She was named the program's second head coach on August 13, 2018.  In her first year at the helm, Mack led the Jaguars to a school-record 16 victories and the program's first winning season.  GSU also won a record-nine games in CACC, knocking off 21st-ranked Saint Xavier in the process. Mack played three years of Division l basketball at Grambling State from 2009-12.  She led the Lady Tigers in scoring (9.8 points per game) as a senior, ranking in the Top 10 in scoring and rebounding in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).
