Dr. Judy Mitchell, Appointed to Governors State University Board of Trustee: A Journey from Alumna to Advocate

Governors State University is proud to welcome Dr. Judy Mitchell, an accomplished alumna and the 2023 College of Business Distinguished Alumni Awardee, as one of the newest members of its Board of Trustees. Appointed by Governor J.B. Pritzker, Dr. Mitchell brings with her a deep understanding of the university's mission, a passion for student success, and a personal connection that dates back to her time as a student at GovState.
Dr. Mitchell began her nearly 30-year career at Joliet Junior College (JJC) as a student, advancing through key administrative roles before being appointed JJC’s President in 2016. Following her retirement in 2022, she leveraged her three decades of experience in higher education to launch Judy Mitchell Consulting, where she continues to champion innovation, strategic leadership, and student-centered initiatives across the academic sector.
When she received news of her appointment to the Board of Trustees, Dr. Mitchell described feeling "deeply honored and incredibly humbled." For her, this new role is more than just a prestigious title—it is a chance to give back to the institution that helped shape her journey. “It was a proud moment, one that affirmed my commitment to service, equity, and educational advancement,” she shared. “I’m truly grateful for the trust placed in me and eager to get to work alongside my fellow board members.”
As a first-generation college graduate and returning adult student, Dr. Mitchell’s personal experience makes her especially attuned to the needs of non-traditional learners. Her connection to Governors State University is both professional and personal. “I understand firsthand the challenges and triumphs that come with navigating higher education,” she said. “My goal is to ensure that all students feel seen, supported, and empowered, no matter where they are in their academic journey.”
Dr. Mitchell credits her time at GovState with shaping her leadership philosophy. Through classroom engagement, faculty mentorship, and interactions with a diverse student body, she learned to lead with empathy, intentionality, and curiosity. “Those experiences strengthened my ability to seek out different perspectives and make thoughtful, inclusive decisions,” she said.
In her new role as trustee, Dr. Mitchell hopes to champion initiatives that support student success, expand institutional engagement and excellence efforts, and increase access to affordable higher education. “Whether students are traditional undergraduates, adult learners, or first-generation college-goers, they deserve the resources and support to thrive,” she emphasized. She also plans to advocate for greater state funding to ensure GovState can continue offering a high-quality, accessible education to all.”
Dr. Mitchell believes what makes GovState unique is its faithful commitment to affordability, access, and genuine care. “Unlike many institutions, GovState offers a personalized educational experience where students aren’t just numbers—they’re known, supported, and encouraged every step of the way,” she said.
As both a trustee and alumna, she is also dedicated to building stronger alumni engagement. “Alumni engagement starts with genuine, ongoing relationships,” she explained. She envisions opportunities for mentorship, career development, and networking through events and panels that connect current students with alumni success stories. “Helping students expand their networks and see the success of those who came before them is key to fostering a vibrant, supportive alumni community.”
When asked about her approach to collaboration on the Board of Trustees, Dr. Mitchell emphasized listening, transparency, and shared purpose. “I believe the best outcomes come from engaging in open dialogue and welcoming diverse perspectives,” she said. “By working together, we can ensure the university not only continues to grow but remains a place of opportunity and academic excellence for generations to come.”
To students considering paths in leadership or public service, Dr. Mitchell offered heartfelt encouragement: “Your voice matters and your perspective is needed. Stay engaged, stay curious, and believe in your ability to make a difference. The journey may be challenging, but it’s incredibly rewarding.”
Looking ahead, Dr. Mitchell sees a bright future for higher education—especially at GovState. “Our students are the future leaders, innovators, and changemakers,” she said. “It’s vital that they remain committed to their dreams because their impact will extend far beyond the classroom.”
To fellow alumni, her message is one of action and gratitude. “I encourage you to find a way to give back to the institution that gave so much to us,” she said. “Your engagement, no matter how big or small, can make a lasting impact.”
Dr. Judy Mitchell’s journey from GovState student to Board of Trustees member is a full-circle moment—one defined by service, leadership, and a deep belief in the power of education. Governors State University is honored to have her back in a role that will shape its future while honoring its past.
