CDIS Students - Foundations of Clinical Education
"Here are a few notables from our Fall 2022 CDIS 8250 class, Foundations of Clinical Education. Our faculty clinical supervision team was comprised of Dr. Nicole Bing, Professor Elaine Reyna, as well as Dr. Angela Riccelli, and we welcomed the new clinical supervisor, Dr. Camille O’Quin. This semester we had 16 CDIS graduate student clinicians serving our two partner sites, Glenwood Academy and GovState’s Family Development Center for 10 weeks.
Our graduate students provided speech and language assessments and speech therapy services to toddlers and preschoolers at the FDC and to children in second through eighth grades at Glenwood Academy. The students generated assessment and therapy plans for their clients, wrote post-session notes to document their client’s progress, and generated end-of-semester reports. At mid-term, the teams conducted a 'Lessons Learned' Activity in which they shared how they solved challenging clinical situations.
In our semester wrap-up session, the students reflected on the growth in their clinical skills and the larger life lessons that they learned from their clinical experience. Beyond clinical writing skills, creating therapy activities, making adaptations to therapy procedures and activities, and managing productive client behaviors, the students related how they gained purpose, confidence, flexibility, and joy from the work they engaged in with clients." -Dr. Nicole Bing

The Communication Disorders department and Family Development Center partner so that our graduate students can provide speech/language services (evaluation and treatment) to students at the FDC. The pre-school age children are also identified through their teachers as having a speech/language need. CDIS students provide FDC identification through screenings several times per year. GovState Lecturer Elaine Reyna and Claudia Nguyen (Health director at the FDC) have been working together to get this in place since Spring 2021.
On April 5th 2022 GovState Intellectual Life Committee sponsored a special event for the GSU community, Integration of Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC):
Practical Strategies led by Heather Miller AAC specialist and Speech
Language Pathologist.
Our awarded Intellectual Life Grant is focused on a student, staff, and GovState workshop introducing the GovState community to augmentative and alternative communication as well as unlocking communication barriers with individuals who utilize AAC devices in the community.
