The journey of two friends across decades, miles and a country divided. Eleanor, the daughter of a wealthy Jewish merchant, and Hanna, a young, enslaved woman refuse to accept the societal norms of their time. Set against a backdrop of a country divided by race, religion and politics (in a time not unlike our own), they take tremendous risks in their search for personal freedom. Taking place pre- and post-Civil War, the story spans from Mississippi to Boston, following Eleanor and Hanna who are separated by war, hatred and lies and the journey they must take to reunite and free themselves from the past.
