Higher Learning Commission to visit in February

The Higher Learning Commission (HLC) will be visiting Governors State University (GovState) on February 26, 2024, for a comprehensive evaluation.

 

HLC accredits degree-granting, post-secondary educational institutions in the United States, which means that it recognizes those universities or institutions that maintain a certain level of educational standards. This involves an evaluation of academic offerings as well as the overall institution, including governance and administration, mission, finances and resources.

Acknowledgement of Land and Sovereignty

Governors State University (GovState) in University Park occupies land that was originally the ancestral homelands of various Native Nations, including the Bodwéwadmi (Potawatomi), Kaskaskia, Peoria, Myaamia (Miami), Očhéthi Šakówin (Sioux), Kiikaapoi (Kickapoo), and many others. As an institution dedicated to education and truth, we acknowledge that this land was unjustly taken from Native inhabitants. The original Native peoples held these lands sacred for thousands of years, and they remain important to Native communities today.

Local historians have estimated anywhere between 3,000 and 4,000 refugees from slavery passed through the ground around what is now Governors State on their way to freedom, according to Dr. Megan VanGorder, Assistant Professor of History at Governors State University(GovState), about the prevalence of the Underground Railroad in Will County.

The Governors State University (GovState) cross country teams continue to set school records for 2023 with their most recent accomplishment: three Jaguars qualified for the November National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Nationals, the most ever in a season for GovState cross country.
