About the Scholarship
The Dr. Lorri Glass Generating Hope Scholarships are competitive and awarded in the fall and spring semesters. Students must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program. The Dr. Lorri Glass Generating Hope Award was the legacy of Jerry Davis EL, one of the founding members of Generating Hope (GH), a student-led initiative at Governors State University. Generating Hope’s mission is to promote awareness of the collateral consequences of mass incarceration and to advocate to dismantle these barriers. GH provides support and resources for those impacted and works diligently to assist returning citizens in accessing higher education.
The GH scholarship is intended to provide the awardee with financial assistance, mentoring and professional development to support their educational and career goals. The awardee is a student who is determined to transform their lives and make a difference in the world, develop leadership skills, and be an advocate for social justice.
The GH scholarships are awarded in the fall and spring semesters and is a $1,000.00 scholarship (Note: Award amounts may vary based on funding, availability, and addition, if any, to principal. The amount awarded shall not exceed tuition costs).

Application Criteria
The following are required for the GH Scholarship:
- • Must be a current undergraduate or graduate student at Governors State University.
- • Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 for undergraduates and 3.0 GPA for graduate students.
Recipient Responsibilities
During the duration of the award at GovState, scholarship recipients must:
- • Awardee(s) will be assigned a mentor from the Generating Hope Committee. Awardees are expected to meet with the Generating Hope Committee bimonthly and participate in service, advocacy, educational initiatives through the Social Justice Initiative.
- • The awardee will commit to working with Generating Hope and the Social Justice Initiative in program development, events, and public awareness (media interviews, conferences, and fairs), participate in becoming a mentee for professional and social development, promote Generating Hope on Campus, and participate in bi-monthly meetings with the Generating Hope Committee.
- • Failure to meet any of the above obligations may result in termination of the recipient's scholarship.
Application Procedures
All of the following materials must be submitted by the deadline above:
- • Complete and submit the application form below.
- • Must complete an essay (500 words) speaking to your passion (Social Justice, Advocacy, Restorative Justice, Resilience, Service, Self-Transformation, Socially and economically deprived, and/or Marginalized Community). Include how you have been impacted by incarceration, e.g. self, family, relative, and/or friend. Also include community service work, academic excellence/Civic engagement. Professionalism of writing, essay structure, and clarify when detailing:
- (a) your intended major, academic achievements, and professional experience
- (b) your volunteerism, extracurricular activities, and/or leadership experience
- (c) how receiving this scholarship will help you achieve your goals at Governors State University.
- • Each applicant will have an interview with the Generating Hope Scholarship Committee.
Final award decisions are announced within six weeks of the application deadline.
Essay
Submit a 500-word essay describing the following:
- • Your intended major, academic achievements, and professional experience.
- • Your volunteerism, extracurricular activities, and/or leadership experience.
- • Your passion (Social Justice, Advocacy, Restorative Justice, Resilience, Service, Self-Transformation, Socially and economically deprived, and/or Marginalized Community).
- • Include how you have been impacted by incarceration, e.g. self, family, relative, and/or friend. Also include community service work, academic excellence/Civic engagement.
- • Professionalism of writing, essay structure, and clarify when detailing: (a) your intended major, academic achievements, and professional experience, (b) your volunteerism, extracurricular activities, and/or leadership experience, and (c) how receiving this scholarship will help you achieve your goals at Governors State University.
