Governors State University RECONNECT is an opportunity for past and current undergraduate students to take free non-credit seminars focused on success in college.
The seminars are meant for current undergraduate students who have had some academic challenges or past undergraduates who want to come back to GovState.
Students will attend seminars from January 6th - January 10th and January 13th - January 17th. Each seminar will be two hours with two on-campus sessions. The rest of the seminars will be held online.
Those who attend all seminars and enroll in the Spring 2025 semester will earn a $500 stipend.

Personal Development
- • Time Management &Study Skills: This session will identify common challenges and provide tips to better manage time and study habits
- • Mental Health & Wellness: This session will focus on the importance of mental health and wellness as necessary to learning
- • Building Rapport: Building rapport is important in the classroom and beyond. In this session we’ll focus on techniques of teamwork
- • Fostering a Growth Mindset: A growth mindset is the foundation of learning. This session will explore ways to foster a growth mindset in various areas of life
Persistence Strategies
- • Meeting Expectations: Clear expectations are crucial for success. This session will address how to meet expectations to increase success.
- • Managing Teaching Style: This session will address how to best match your learning methods to the teaching styles and modalities available.
- • Identifying Barriers & Building Resilience: Everyone encounters challenges. This session will help student identify potential barriers and ways to overcome such obstacles in the learning journey.
Performance Improvement Tool Kit
- • Critical Thinking: Critical thinking is necessary for decision-making, problem-solving, and evaluating information. This session will provide strategies to enhance critical thinking skills.
- • Information Literacy: Not all information is created equal, and not everything you read is true. This session will help students evaluate information and identify misinformation.
- • Understanding Quantitative Problems and Data Sets: Understanding data is in various forms is an essential skill in daily life and most careers. This session will provide tips on working with data.
- • Writing Persuasively: Although different careers require different types of writing styles, they all share one goal: to persuade the reader. This session will explore various types of writing.
- • Appropriate Use of Software & AI: Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Grammarly, and generative AI tools are all around us. This session will address learning how to use these tools/software responsibly.
