The State Universities Retirement System (SURS) of
Illinois administers the retirement plan for employees of public colleges and
universities. Participation begins on the first day of employment and requires
a mandatory contribution of 8% of gross salary to the plan. Police Officers are required to contribute 9.5% of their gross salary.
Employees have a choice of three pension plan
options. Employees have six months from
the initial date of employment to select one of the three plans. This is a lifetime irrevocable decision. For more information see the SURS website at www.surs.org.
